DECS Designated: Special Interest Music
Marryatville's music program is regarded as one of the best in Australia and has an enviable reputation for the quality of performance ensembles, classroom music activities and achievements of graduates.

A Brief Local History

Marryatville's Special Interest MusicMusic Centre began in 1976. The historical 'Stables' building and the new Music Suite opened in 1997. It services approximately 120 students who gain entry via an auditioning process, which attracts much of the outstanding talent available in South Australia. It equally services approximately further 300 students from the general population of the school, where a rich and diverse Arts education has been carefully nutured as an integral part of the general curriculum offering.

In recognition of the school's contribution to excellence in this area won the 2001 SA Great Award for Music and was a winner in The Australian's Australia's Best Schools awards in 2002. Four world class musicians, Richard Tognetti and Ben and Tobias Lee, and Graham Abbott, are patrons of the Special Interest Music Centre.

Music Programme

The programs in the Music Centre provide a balance between music education in its broadest sense and music performance, as well as an intensive study in music within the context of a balanced general education.

The multifaceted music curriculum that the students at Marryatville are offered includes development of choral, concert band, jazz, orchestral, solo and small ensemble skills both within the programme as well as extra curricular.

Courses and Curriculum

Because of the special staffing and resources, Marryatville High School Special Interest Music Centre is able to offer unique opportunities for music study at secondary level, while maintaining other studies.

The music program is designed to cater for special interest music students whose highly developed musical gifts and talents or strong musical potential and commitment need more specialist nurturing than can be afforded by the traditional school framework.

Special interest music students have approximately double the number of classroom music lessons as elective music students. The following areas of study form the basis of the Junior School program:

Solo performance Choral training
Theoretical studies Aural training
Historical and analytical studies Composition and arrangement
Music technology Instrumental tuition
Ensemble performance .

In the Senior School a wide range of SACE options at Stage 1 and Stage 2 are available. Our students gain merit certificates at this level each year.
