Services: English as a
Second Language (ESL)
English
as a Second Language is intended for students who come from a non-English
speaking background. This includes immigrants (recently arrived or long
term residents) or students born in Australia.
English
as a Second Language provides opportunities for students to develop their
skills in listening, viewing, speaking, writing and using technology.
This is done through the study of themes. Students read, view and listen
to a range of texts and discuss topics of interest. They communicate both
orally and in writing for a variety of purposes, audiences and situations.
Students undertake research by acquiring information from a variety of
sources and analyse and process the information to address the task set.
Students also construct creative and imaginative texts.
In Year 11 students study 3-4 themes. The activities undertaken while
studying these themes will include written and oral/aural tasks which
develop skills in the informational, interpersonal and aesthetic domains
of language use.
At
Stage 2 SAS & PES ESL are offered. These courses are designed to further
develop students' communicative competence in spoken and written English
for a variety of purposes.
