Policies: Uniform

Students in all year levels are expected to wear the complete school uniform at school and at official school events and excursions, unless otherwise instructed.

The uniform has been developed and changed over time in a consultative process involving parents, students and staff.

The School prides itself on the high level of compliance of students with the policy, and on the overall appearance of students in this area.

The School Community has committed itself to the school uniform, and the staff expects students to comply. Parents are notified if there is an ongoing problem, and students are regularly reminded of their responsibility.

While in the main part, positive reinforcement and polite reminders to students ensure that the uniform is worn, and worn neatly, there is a behaviour management and discipline aspect that comes into play as soon as necessary.

The School hat policy, set in place for reasons of student health, is another aspect of the school uniform, and compliance is achieved in the same way.

Students are required to wear uniform because it provides:

  • identification with the school,
  • a sense of pride in belonging to this school,
  • security, as any strangers among students can be easily identified,
  • equity, since students do not feel that they have to dress competitively,
  • the opportunity for students to feel respect for themselves and others because of their positive image,
  • a lower cost to families in the long term.

CONSEQUENCES OF BREACHING THE POLICY
The uniform policy is monitored by the Home Group teacher, however every teacher has a responsibility to ensure that Uniform is worn correctly.
In the first instance the Home Group teacher asks to see a note to explain why the student is out of uniform. If no note or acceptable reason is given then the following may occur:

  • warning,
  • Breach of Uniform Policy note is sent home to parents,
  • detention,
  • student sent home to change,
  • withdrawal from class.

A detailed item by item description of the school uniform is available online.

The School Uniform Shop can be found on the Marryatville School Grounds.
