A popular and powerful engine with straightforward syntax rules. Responses are ranked in groups of ten to a page, from most likely to least likely.

Google Group Searches Usenet newsgroups. Keywords are used.

Excite

Searches not only for the presence of keywords within a site, but also deals with concepts. Matches are made using a percentage 'confidence' scale. Links are also made to related document categories.
Go.com Popular general search engine with simple search syntax. Responses are ranked.

HotBot

Uses menu options to configure both normal and expert mode searches. Among other things, all or any keywords, phrases and URLs can be matches. The expert mode allows for searching by geographic location and document type. Search returns are ranked by a percentage relevance scale and include a synopsis.

Lycos

Very large database that uses basic search syntax and also thematic indexing. One of the first very large and reliable search engines. Responses are ranked.

WebCrawler

Good general search engine with simple search syntax.
Wombat Searches Australian and New Zealand sites.

Yahoo

Comprehensive search engine with excellent thematic indexing. Can also search Usenet postings.
