Learning Area: Languages

This curriculum has been developed on the basis of a communicative approach to language teaching and learning. It emphasises communicative use of the target language to convey meaning in a variety of contexts for a variety of purposes with a variety of people.

Through development of the ability to communicate effectively in the language, learners will also gain explicit knowledge and skills about the structure of the language, and strategies to maintain communication and to learn a language. In order for learners to become effective communicators they need sound communication and intercultural skills.

Three strands of the SACSA Framework are integral to learning of LOTE :
  • Communication
  • Understanding Language
  • Understanding Culture

All students study a Language in year 8 for the whole year. Most should continue it throughout their Middle Years of Schooling.

The languages curriculum enables students to use a foreign language for professional and business needs, as well as for travel and personal satisfaction.

Marryatville offers language programs in French, Japanese, and Chinese.
