Music is available for all students who wish to include it as an elective
subject. These students study the subject Music 1 and a minimum of one instrument of choice.

Students who have won their way through audition into the Special Interest Music Program study Music 1 and a second subject Music 2. As well, they study two or more instruments.

For more information on the above mentioned courses please visit our special interest music program details.

Music Program

The Special Interest Music Centre (SIMC) programs aim to offer students courses which provide a balance between music education in its broadest sense and music performance, as well as an intensive study in music within the context of a balanced general education.

The multifaceted music curriculum that the students at Marryatville are offered includes development of choral, concert band, jazz, orchestral, solo and small ensemble skills both within the programme as well as extra curricular.

Many graduates from Marryatville have continued their pursuit of musical excellence, not only in Adelaide but interstate and overseas.

Courses and curriculum

Because of the special staffing and resources, Marryatville High School SIMC is able to offer unique opportunities for music study at secondary level, while maintaining other studies.

The music program is designed to cater for special interest music students whose highly developed musical gifts and talents or strong musical potential and commitment need more specialist nurturing than can be afforded by the traditional school framework.

Special interest music students have approximately double the number of classroom music lesson time than elective music students.

The following areas of study form the basis of the Junior School programme:
  • Solo performance
  • Composition and arrangement
  • Theoretical studies
  • History and analytical studies
  • Music technology
  • Ensemble performance
  • Aural training
  • Choral training
  • Instrumental tuition
In the Senior School a wide range of SACE options at Stage 1 and Stage 2 are available. Our students gain merit certificates at this level each year.
